The terminology ‘White Privilege’ has been a constant white noise in my ears recently. Parents at my school, my friends and the media are increasingly voicing the belief that we need to check and acknowledge our ‘White Privilege’. But what exactly does it mean?
I was interested to find out how the ‘White Privilege’ ideology began. A woman by the name of Peggy McIntosh in 1989, wrote a paper on ‘White Privilege’. A paper with no methodology, it is the opinion of one person that has never been subject to any statistical analysis. The paper consists of 20 statements and answering yes to a number of these statements determines you as ‘White Privileged’.
The first three statements are as follows:
- I can arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.
- I can go shopping alone most of the time, well assured that I will not be followed or harassed.
- I can turn on the television or open to the front page of the paper and see people of my race widely represented.
These are majority statements, not privilege statements. If this paper was published in the Middle East, or in China the results would also determine the occupants of those countries are ‘White Privileged’. The conclusion of her paper states “we (whites) are justly seen as oppressive, even when we don’t see ourselves that way”. Her theory has painted each white person as an oppressor based on the colour of skin. That statement, is in fact RACIST.
The definition of RACISM from Webster’s Dictionary is as follows;
(Noun) – the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
The push behind this idea is predominately coming from the left side of the political aisle. They believe they are morally superior to the white people who disagree with the notion. They demand and bully white people to acknowledge our ‘White Privilege’ even though it is extremely insulting to all other ethnic minorities.
Recently, an African American 8-year-old boy came home from school and innocently asked his Mother “Why are the white skinned kids better than me?”. His Mum was furious. The PTA of that elementary school had given flyers to the children explaining the concept of ‘White Privilege’. Children have no preconception about privileges by skin colour, they are all equal beings that have varied pigmentation. That flyer that was supposedly ‘a good message’ did the complete opposite, it shamed the white kids and victimised the ethnic minority kids. You can’t get any more insulting or racist.
Martin Luther King lived and died for his dream, that his children will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. Why are we not honouring this incredible legacy; we are instead teaching children that we should be judging each other by the colour of our skins.
Surely rational thinking Mums of the world can see that determining privileges or advantages based on majority pigmentation is ludicrous. Privileges are based on individual circumstances, geographical privilege, wealth privilege, social status/class privilege, health privilege, educational privilege, peace, freedom and happiness privileges. Whiteness IS NOT A PRIVILEGE!
This Mum who Matters, will not be checking my kids ‘White Privilege’. They will be raised for appreciating the wonderful things they have in life and the safe environment they live in. They will know that there are disadvantaged people in the world, poverty is around us and what they can do to help make the world a better place.
They will not be taught adversity is based on skin colour, it is the result of culture, geography, climate, war and economics, these are the issues that disadvantage people. We can all do our bit to support those less fortunate; pushing the myth of ‘White Privilege’ isn’t helping the world, it is only dividing the world.

A beautiful image that is indoctrinating the youths of today! Imagine showing this to a white homeless woman and advising her that she is lucky because she has white skin.
